My name is Scott Harwell and I have 15 years of experience. If you are viewing my Web site, you are most likely in need of the services of an attorney. When I initially meet clients, I tell them it is nice to meet them but I am honestly sorry that we met on these terms because it is rare that a client truly WANTS to retain my services. The same holds true for other professions and specialists such as doctors, accountants, mechanics, etc. Nobody WANTS to go to a doctor, pay to have their car fixed, or have a lawyer represent them in Court. When prospective clients call me and ask me if they need an attorney, I like to quote Abraham Lincoln “He who represents himself has a fool for a client.” Just like you would not perform surgery on yourself, you do not need to represent yourself in Court except in the most minor of cases. Even then, you should at least call an attorney and speak with them on the phone or schedule a consultation so you will understand your rights and the legal process.
When asked what type of law I practice, I tell prospective clients and people that I meet that I can handle most legal matters that the average person or business needs. It is a rare person that will never need the services of an attorney during their life. Whether it is the loss of a job, a car accident, an on the job injury, an arrest on a criminal charge, a denial of an insurance claim, a disability, marital problems, financial problems, needing a will, handling a loved ones will, reviewing a mortgage, landlord/tenant disputes, most people will deal with one or more of these issues at some point in time. If you have a legal situation that is more complex or specialized such as patent law, securities law, tax law, etc., I will either associate your case and/or refer you to an attorney or a law firm that specializes in that area of law.
The fees I charge are competitively priced and fully explained to clients prior to their retaining my services. If your case is a personal injury, social security, employment discrimination or other type of Plaintiff’s case, I generally will perform these services on a contingency fee in which I do not charge a fee unless your case is settled or you win your case in Court. Cases such as bankruptcy, uncontested divorces, criminal plea bargains, etc., can usually be done on a flat fee basis where you are quoted a set price. Finally, other legal matters in which I cannot predict the amount of time that will be expended on your case such as contested divorces, civil litigation, criminal jury trials, etc. are charged on an hourly rate. If you are charged by the hour, you will receive a detailed and itemized statements which fully sets out the amount of time spent on your case. In addition, if you ever have any questions about your charges, I will happily discuss them with you.
